The Forecast Blows

The Forecast says spring wont really be making an appearance for at least 2 weeks.
Expect Hot Dog Day to be cloudy, rainy and a high of 3.

Why does mother nature hate us? Is it because I abandoned my reusable grocery bags to go back to the plastic ones so I could use them as garbage bags??

This picture of the bambi makes me feel mildly better.

Booty Shaking Time, Fo Reals

Holy Shit!!

South Rakkas Crew will be at the Northern this Friday night!!
This is gonna be complete absolute crazyness!

Last time I saw these guys they opened for Diplo in Calgary and while they played they berated the Calgary crowd for having no style!!!! Bahahahah, but when I started looking around the club it was apparent that Suzy Sher musta just had a sale.
What these brothers are gonna think of our toque wearing bum scene should be interesting. If you got a rope chain, this is the night to wear it, unless you are me and wear it to any other Friendly Fire night.
SEE YOU THERE!

On May Long Weekend This Year...

CBC NEWS: The RCMP police complaints commissioner said police efforts to stop drunken revellers from ruining Canada Day celebrations, while laudable, aren't legal.

Paul Kennedy was looking into the actions of West Shore RCMP in B.C. in their attempt to help Victoria police rid the annual Canada Day fireworks celebration of drunken rowdies.

On Canada Day last year, RCMP and other police forces searched members of the public and seized vast amounts of alcohol and drugs destined to be consumed at the celebration.

A woman launched a complaint after being searched three times, pointing out police forces in Canada don't have the authority to initiate such random searches.

Kennedy concluded the searchers weren't authorized under the B.C. Liquor Control Act, which he said in his report is unfortunate.

Kennedy said if the police searches are to continue, then either the B.C. government or City of Victoria needs to change the laws to give police the legislative authority.

Sooooo, you might not get searched this year, but you could still get shot or tasered to death!!

Burn Out

Starbucks Corp. will shut down its Aberdeen Centre location in Richmond, B.C., on Wednesday, the company's first-ever closing in Canada.

The coffee retailer said the decision to close was caused by current economic conditions and because the location itself was under-performing.

Starbucks has announced it plans on closing 100 coffee shops outside of the U.S., but it has so far not revealed how many more outlets in B.C. will be shuttered.

Starbucks still has 365 locations in the province.

Is it the economy or the product???? Starbucks is way over roasted, Ive never liked it. I once worked with a lady at a news station in Calgary that relied on her morning Starbucks as a form of a laxitive, she said it HAD to be Starbucks! She'd drink it, then about 30 minutes later she'd briskly walk past my desk towards the restroom. Haha.

The economy issues haven't affected my coffee habit/addiction. I have bought a take out coffee everyday for the past 2 weeks. Honest! Tim Hortons, Mugshots and The Fernie Tea and Coffee House all know me well! And today I tried the Cincott oraganic coffee for the first time, it was great but the take away lids dont stay on well. I know I know, but my to-go cup had frozen coffee in it.

Sidenote: Tim Hortons has over 3000 locations across Canada with no plans to close any.

Did you know, if you drive from Fernie to Tofino, you will hit 27 Tim Horton's locations.

Fernie Represent!

The Junos are on tonight.
(crickets)

Full of Canadian pride, fresh from watching "One Week" I flipped to the show and to my surprise a beautiful Emily Brydon was in the audience and getting an interview where she gave Fernie BC a shout out and waved her arms with the universal "Rock n Roll" hand signs! haahha way to go Emily!
Thaddda girl! Fernie Represent!!!

Doesnt this picture of Avril damper your Canadian pride! Gross.

There's One In All Of Us

Spike Jonze makes "Where The Wild Things Are".
An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world--a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.
To be released in October. Tag Line: There's one in all of us.

This is going to be great for all, but especially for a generation that grew up reading that book and is now running the rat race grown-ups do.

You Must!

Remember the first time you saw the "My Name is Joe and I Am Canadian" beer commerical a couple years ago? Remember how fucking awesome it was? How it sparked your Canadian pride and patriotism??

Well, this movie will do the same thing for you.
I really enjoyed it, you must see it!

Dont worry, its not the doom and gloom movie you expect it will be. It will have you laughing throughout and beaming in Canadian pride.

Dont Believe The Hype!

Need a passport?
Well, don’t drive to Cranbrook.
Dont believe the hype. The so-called passport centre in Cranbrook that’s located in the Service Canada office is a joke.
The ONLY point of that government service is to just look over your application to make sure you filled in all the correct boxes. They then drop it in the regular mail like you would do from Fernie. And by checking it over, they don’t verify the information you wrote down, just that the spaces are filled with information.
In no way whatsoever can the office in Cranbrook fast track your passport, expedite it, or get it to you any faster in any way other then in the 4-6 week period.
If you want your passport in 2 weeks or less you HAVE to visit the Passport Canada office in a major city.
After driving all the way to Cranbrook instead of using my one day off to drive to Calgary. I was informed once I got there that the whole purpose of my drive was to just have an agent look over my form.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH what a fucking WASTE!!

I actually asked the agent “So, what’s the point of coming here and this office???” Her response, “Oh well we look over your application to make sure you filled it out correctly”.
WTF are people this stupid that the government had to open a secondary office in Cranbrook for this reason??? Service Canada locations offer other services, but the main hype around this was to help the passport process. I specifically recall a media blitz with MP Jim Abbott, toting the great new passport office in Cranbrook. Basically if you are a normal functioning human being and you carefully fill your form out with caution and scrutiny, then drop it in the mail. You will get your passport in the same amount of time that it would take you if you drove to Cranbrook and had the government employees check it over and stick the stamp on it for you.
My trip wasn't a total waste, I had lunch at "East Side Marios" the new restaurant in the old Boston Pizza location. Marios totally kicks Boston Pizzas ass.

Goodbye Cranbrooklyn, Hello Alberta

A Formal Press Conference...

On Wednesday March 25, Fernie Alpine Resort held an impromptu press conference to help satisfy the peaked curiosities and settle the flying questions about the upcoming 1st Annual Fernival event. Since the first event announcement, people have been mystified by SN-O-BAMA and where Spirit of the West fits into it all? After much speculation about what it all could mean, Fernie Alpine Resort provides solid answers that hope to bring some calm to the Fernival fever that has taken aflame since the first mention of this new and enigmatic event. And though the press conference drew in few, for the amazing snow at the resort kept everyone out skiing, the critical Q & A session was documented and goes as follows:

Q: What is Fernival and when is it?A: Fernival is the name of Fernie Alpine Resort’s brand new ANNUAL SPRING CELEBRATION. The name is a play on “Fernie” with the word “festival”. We wanted the name to not only reflect the wonderful resort location but also stand the test of time. With the bonus weekend planned on Saturday April 18-19th, we thought it would be a climactic way to end the season with this festive event.

Q: What is all this talk about “SN-O-BAMA” and skiing in jeans?A: SN-O-BAMA is the chosen theme for the 1st Annual Fernival event. Again, the name is a play on words, putting “snow” together with “bama” which in urban lingo means: crazy, outrageous, and odd. Though the name has a coincidental reference to a certain current political figure, let it be known that Fernie Alpine Resort has no plan to nationalize the ski industry nor campaign political views throughout Fernival. Despite the connotation, we felt that it was no time to bail out on some good creativity and pushed forward with the theme believing that it truly describes the unique experience that Fernival promises to give. Recognizing a need for change, we felt “SN-O-BAMA” was an original and deserving homage to SNOW. And since “bama” has urban roots to mean slightly unstylish, we added in the throw-back reference to skiing in jeans taking this event back to the good ol’ times when we had fun and skied! We encourage you all to wear your jeans and ski too - Yes, you can! All in all, we knew the name would create some stimulus in the populations and we are glad that it got your attention. Come and get SN-O-BAMA with us!

Q: Is the real Spirit of the West playing or is this some kind of tribute band?A: Lo and behold, the real Spirit of the West will be donning us with their presence and providing their fantastic music at Fernival on April 18 in the Fernie Alpine Resort plaza. Talk about standing the test of time, this Canadian band has lasted a quarter of a century in the music industry and are a proud inductee into the Western Canadian Music Association’s Hall of Fame. We feel our guests deserve musical entertainment that promises spirit and tradition and so we bring you Canadian alt-rockers, Spirit of the West. Join us in the plaza at 3:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday April 18 and let their foot-stomping blend of hard rock, britpop and celtic folk fire you up at Fernival.

Q: Are there any other activities and fun to be had at Fernival?A: Our spring bash will keep you entertained from beginning to end with a live DJ spinning in the plaza, fun games and activities happening all afternoon, the amazing live music from Spirit of the West, and not to mention all the fun you will have skiing and riding. Meet new friends or hang with the old ones. Come on out and celebrate Fernival with us - this is an event you won’t want to miss!

soooo, see you on Hot Dog Day...

The film fest this weekend got me thinking;
If Schoolyard held a film fest it would look like:

4:00pm

Luc Coultry and Will Ferrell

"Drop Dead Gorgeous" followed by "Wayne’s World".

And DJ Degree is at the Northen, hes from Edmonton and is alright.

I'm Obsessed!

Okay other then the weak moment I had walking past Cook’s Cabin on Saturday night, I’m really trying to incorporate organic foods and products into my little world.
One product that I found in Banff a year ago and I absolutely CANNOT get enough of is
“100% Pure”.

Don’t be fooled by their lackluster labels, I’ve never been so impressed with a product before like this one. And if anyone knows make-up and lotions its freakin’ moi and you know it. I have tried the lotions, and the nourishing face oil and it’s AMAZING.
100% natural and organic!!
The scents of these products are sooo naturally real. You know what Im saying? REAL! Don’t feel guilty slathering it all over yourself. You wont be able to touch Walmart crap again.

Ps. Why you should go Organic…
1 It's healthy On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants.

2 No nasty additives Organic food doesn't contain food additives which can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity. Amongst the additives banned are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate.

3 Avoids pesticides Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues are often present in non-organic food.

4 No GM Genetically modified (GM) crops and ingredients are not allowed under organic standards.

5 Reliance on drugs removed There is growing concern about the high use of antibiotics on farm animals and the possible effects on human health. Soil Association standards prohibit the routine use of antibiotics.

6 No hidden costs Compare this with the 120million that tax payers fork out to pay for chemicals to be removed from drinking water, mainly as a result of the pesticides used in farming.

7 High standards Organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year. The standards for organic food are laid down in Canadian law.

8 Care for animals Animal welfare is taken very seriously under organic standards. The benefits of the organic approach are acknowledged by animal welfare organizations such as Compassion in World Farming as well as the government.

9 Good for wildlife and the environment The government has said that it is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide - the main global warming gas - and less dangerous wastes.

10 Top for taste Many people prefer organic food because they say it tastes better. A number of top chefs choose organic. Including many local chefs in Fernie.

Spring Release

For those who know how amazing the Whitewater cookbooks are from Nelson BC, you’ll have no problem understanding why Island Lake Lodge has jumped the bandwagon for publishing a signature cookbook.
I personally own the 2 Whitewater books, (The new one was just released). I am a huge fan of them. I actually just made the “Dad’s Lunchbox Cookies” from the second book just 2 nights ago, sooo good!
The rumor is, from a trusted souce, the Island Lake cookbook is going to blow the Whitewater book out of the freakin water!!
Im amped for the release this spring. Watch for a launch at Polar Peak.
Polar Peak Books, apparently, have sold more Whitewater cookbooks then Harry Potter books! So this launch party better bring it!
It will be available through Polar Peek and Island Lake for $29.95
Expect chef conversational bios and the sickest pics by Henry Gorgi.

FUN-Due

Have you tried the Fondue at Cincott’s Organic Market yet?
Mmmmm, its straight up a great time to get down with melted cheese. Melted cheese is pretty much the way to anyone’s heart, truly don’t you think? Also try the meat fondue or the chocolate fondue. A variety of different fondues are available. Rosemary and I tried the “Oakanagan Cheese Fondue” and it was a fon-DO-IT. Everything is organic at Cincott Orangic Market, its truly amazing and extra de-lish! This addition to Fernie is a FUN-DO!
Cincott Organic Market is located in the old Jamochas house, beside Stop'n'Shop.
Prices range by how many people in your party. "$25 for a 1-2 person cheese fondue"

In Less Then A Month...

Hot Dog Day April 8th

Do you know what you are wearing yet?

Stop into The Revival for some hot doggin threads and accessories.
The Pub is having their Hot Dog Party the night before Hot Dog Day. Whats with that? I hear they are super tired of all the drunk people on actual Hot Dog Day. Where is the party on the night of the 8th then? Someone talk to me!

White Beer

Ahhhhh! Before all I could get my hands on was warm Hoegaarden in the back of the Liqour store covered in dust. Now it seems every company is trying to pull it off. I think its getting “clear pepsi”–esque. Just leave white beer to the experts of white beer and stick making your regular lager, maybe you even need to improve what you already got. Perhaps white beer is just the modern thing to do. Freyja should come out with a Freyja White Beer, just in time to coordinate it with all the spring dresses and jammer shorts in the shop. Now that’s thinking!

Affordable Housing Bylaw in Fernie
More affordable housing could be coming to Fernie.
Fernie Council received a report on a proposed bylaw that would require 15 percent of new housing units be set aside as affordable housing.
The development community had a number of questions about the proposed bylaw, asking who would be eligible for the housing and how the City intends to form partnerships to create more affordable housing.
Councilor Mary Giuliano says she thinks the report helps clarify things. Staff has put together a number of answers for the questions being asked.
Council will give the bylaw first and second reading at an upcoming council meeting.

Brillant! ....NOT

The Vatican announced on International Women's Day, March 8th, that women should give thanks for the washing machine. Because the pope feels the washing machine has liberated women more so then the pill or working. Im not kidding, he actrually said this.
Hey Pope Banjo-Eyes!! Seems to me the pill and the washing machine has done more for women then the vatican ever has.
In the US, 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, and over 50% of those unplanned pregnancies end in abortion, Im sure the vatican has something to do with that.

How can this organization be so out of touch. I would be offended by these comments if I thought the Pope has any relevance to my life or the world im living in. Turd.

Whine and Cheese

Sorry for the lack of brillant posts. I have been hit with the Fernie plague. Not the clap!! That nasty cold flu that has seemed to hit every second person in the valley.
Have you noticed that when you are sick, every single person seems to offer up some miracle cure that you must have totally never heard of??? Its annoying! Over the past few days I have been told to, and sometimes yelled at, to try oil of oregano, chicken soup, cold fx, the steam room at the pool and an assortment of pharmacy treats. AHHH when you have a cold there is no miracle, you just have to rest and let it take its course. And DUH, I have heard all those fixes before and I have also tried all of them. Just let me wallow in my pain until by body heals itself. But thanks you are all sweethearts.

Griz Days Weekend

The only event on Saturday night with a full house was the Vagina Monologues. Go figure.
Griz Days is like the second season of Heroes. You know it should be good, you look forward to it, people talk it up, but when you get into it, its sucks so bad you hide your face behind a couch cushion.

Cheers to next year.

Fernwood

Film Crews to be on the streets of Fernie April 20.

If you havent heard, John Cusask has been milling around Fernie with his "people" scouting for locations to film a movie here. The movie is supposed to be about a bunch of old guys sitting in a hot tub reminising about the good ol' days and then the hot tub transports them to 1987 where they can re-live their party days. BAHAHAHAHAHAH how many guys in Fernie are acting that scene out RIGHT NOW, if only we could send them back to 1987!! HAHHAHA this script is no stretch eh?

The movie doesnt seem to have anyother famous people in it, just John. His last couple movies have put John on the B-list, so will this Fernie movie go straight to dvd? Or can Fernie revive his career?? Either way John is still funny and oddly sexy, please film your movie here! And please bring your sister!

Remember when Steve Martin filmed Roxanne in Nelson in 1986, ya I bearly remember too I was 5, but that city still milks that claim to fame, we need a shameless turn now too!!!

Filming is due to start on April 20.

Tipping In A Dangerous Time

For all the servers that have rented a room in my house and all my dear server friends, this one is for you.

Tipping in Fernie has a darkside. Turns out, our quaint, colorful and international mix of townspeople isn’t as educated and worldly as like to think we are. Travelers and locals are tipping poorly and it’s such a shame they choose to be so ignorant about it. Because give me a break, you DO know better and now you just look tacky as fuck.
Of course I am not speaking about everyone, because not everyone is a douchebag when it comes to tipping. Most are well aware of how important this aspect is in the hospitality industry, or they just respect that this is the situation and you just have to account for it.

Oh my have I heard some whopper embarrassing stories about people in town, I would never name names obviously, but I will share some.

-A local lady brought her entourage of women to a certain pub and was waited on hand and foot by the server that the server actually would call a friend. The server meticulously waited on their every request, paying extra attention because this was a friend of theirs. The bill came to $178.40. They table left $180. They graciously thanked her and waved as they left. ***cringe!
-A fine dining establishment that unfortunately does not exist anymore, attracted a local business man and his wife to regularly dine there. They thoroughly enjoyed the place and the particular server. They liked their server so much that they subjected her to extensive small talk about their overachieving children throughout the night, every time. They never left more then 5%. **These people know better, trust me.
-At a different pub then mentioned above, a server waited on a table of local “dudes”. They were demanding and brass, but she smiled and did her job. They left her pennies. **classic ignorant shitheads, who if their server girlfriends were with them the girls would have left more then their share to make up for these idiots to avoid embarrassment.
-At a local golf resort, a table of local wealthy ladies left the server $2 after she served them for 3 hours. ****you never know who is watching you old bags!!

Ahhhh tacky. It’s a small town!! People talk about your shitting tipping if you haven’t realized it.

http://www.lousytippers.com/ – a website where your name could be listed as a bad tipper. The server can post anonymously.
http://www.tipthepizzaguy.com/ – dedicated to educating the masses why you should tip the pizza guy.

I could write pages and pages of real life stories about travelers that act dumb about tipping and tip poorly, but at this point we just got to accept that not everyone that visits Canada is going to have the same respect that we might have when we Canadians visit their countries and abide by those countries rules and customs. This is why most restaurants “auto grad” a gratuity to protect the server from getting screwed over.

But with this heated economic climate. Are people tipping less these days? Would it be okay to cut back if we are all scrimping? Is it more acceptable to receive a shitty tip if the town is bobbing its head just above the water in an economic crisis?
The answer is NO!

The Globe and Mail did a survey Jan 15 2009 of the country, and looks like we are basically all decent human beings here in Canada, our tipping has remained the same since entering this economic downturn. Across the border, USA Today is saying last month that Americans are leaving less in tips and sometimes all together leaving nothing. Hopefully we don’t follow suit.
However, when sales are down, that means tips are down. You can’t get tips when people aren’t coming through the door, and when someone is counting on those tips to survive, they are feeling the pinch too.
Fernie servers have noticed lately that it’s slower so less tips in general. But tippers are still leaving a standard 15-20%. But also, more and more servers are exercising the “autograd” on many tables of 4-5 or more, just to avoid getting screwed over, they just can’t take the risk anymore if that table will leave a bad tip.

Tipping Guildlines
Bartender - $1.00 to $2.00 per drink or 20% of the total tab.
Coatroom Attendant - $1.00 to $2.00 per coat checked.
Gas Attendant - It's rare these days but if they pump the gas for you they should get $1.00 to $2.00.
Hairdresser/Barber - 15% to 20%.
Hotel Bellhop - $1.00 to $2.00 per bag, with a $2.00 minimum.
Hotel Concierge - $5.00 to $10.00 for getting tickets or reservations.
Hotel Housekeeper - $2.00 to $5.00 per night.
Manicurist - 15%
Room Service - 15% to 20%
Pizza/Delivery Person-
$2.00 or 15% to 20%, whichever is greater.
Spa Service - 15% to 20%
Taxi Driver - 20%
Waiter/Waitress - 15% to 20%, more if the service is very good.

“Thank you very much, please tip your server, Ill be here all week!

The night kicks off with local rock band Cam Labelle And The Soul Rockets, THEN, Super cool music man Micheal Fizgerald brings “Soap Star” to Fernie. It’s a reeeeeallllly coooool band from Calgary, trust me, you will be happy you came!
THEN…
O.M.G
Vinyl Ritchie finishes the night.
This DJ is no regular DJ, this old school dude that hails from Nelson plays straight up vinyl records and to watch him float along the decks is just straight up ‘effin rad. Anybody, any punk, hillbilly, techno nerd or music hater will raise their hands like they just don’t care! No crazy hard dance beats, just pure ass shaking true tunes. I talk a lot of things up, but THIS night is going to be SOOOOO AWESOME FOR ALLL!
The theme of this year’s Griz Days is “celebration of snow”, yup they dropped the Mardi Gras theme, so come dressed in white and celebrate Griz days.
All this goodness is one night
