Native Knock-Off Sells Big in Fernie

Have you guys seen Fields lately? What is with them stocking the copious amounts of knock off Native art? Shit is hilarious, but its selling! They have like an aisle dedicated to it. I have to admit I bought a huge horse screen printed dreamcatcher for my room, its so nasty tacky that I love it! They know people man, they know what sells.

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE

Party on tonight my prettys.

This Saturday

Nice one. Fernie locals Erin Frances Teeple and Will Ripley have booked themselves a gig at the Central this Saturday. Catch these birds on their home turf before you have to pay top dolla in the city to see em. (they are kinda a big deal in Vancouver, jus saying)
Except some rippin grippin guitar rifts and sexy smooth vocals, live music for your ear's delight.

Vulture

Cant believe I havent blogged about this before, one of my like most fav freaking things in the universe is those deli roast chickens from Overwaitea or Extra Foods. Man, I have to like refrain myself from eating the whole thing. Its amazing, well, when is greasy meat not amazing hahahahahah.

New Years Party Guide

Ahhh New Years, that night where you think you should be having so much goddamn fun, but it turns out as you knew it would be, it turns out totally anti-climatic. Like a student art film. But every year I make it out and have a 'time just to say I did. New Years in Fernie comes down to: The Pub, The Main Cool bar of the time (which is Bulldogs this season) and House Parties. Each have there pros and cons. You decide.

The Pub is having a sick music party put together by Fedski. His well establised friends in the DJ biz are coming to the mountains to shake the pub up. Yeah, its the pub, crappy atmosphere and lots of out of towners, but if you like House Music, this is your party. But they are planning on some cool lighting I here.

Bulldogs: Bryx and DJ Degree. Will be a good dance party and there will be a local scene there. It'll be fun, but nothing out of the ordinary. Tickets are way cheap, so that makes things even to me. Count on the ratio of men to women to be high, so watch out ladies at midnight you will have a line up of dudes to "kiss" you. I was fucking dodging sloppy shit everywhere last year. Im bringing my SARS mask this year in case shit gets outta hand again.

House Parties: Its really annoying to organize these or get people together all on the same page, but somehow it always magically comes together and the morning after is something out of a John Hughes movie. But if you put all your eggs in this party basket you risk a shut down from the local Barney Fyfes at an early hour and you're left with 7Eleven hotdogs.

The Royal: Shred Kelly, and a some dj. I wonder what e-heads look like at a banjo party? weird.

Stuck

Dont you hate it when you pull through a Drive Thru and you get to the order sign and your fucking window is frozen and you have to open your door to give the money and get your coffee?? God I hate that, happens to me everytime!!
Maybe I need to start making coffee at home. Jeeeez

Taking a Puff

So last night I was out at the bar, and I was talkin huge shit about how when Hot Tub Time Machine comes out, we gotta, as a town, have a drinking game. Like when we see people we know, we'll have to take certain shots or something. And I say, "ya if we see Elliot we gotta do like 5 shot of jager!". Then this morning I wake up and see this trailer for the first time....

Cant Wait!

Twig and Berries

The History of Mistletoe:
From the earliest times mistletoe has been one of the most magical, mysterious, and sacred plants of European folklore. It was considered to bestow life and fertility; a protection against poison; and an aphrodisiac. The mistletoe of the sacred oak was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids ( Who thought it looked like male gentialia and called it "oak sperm"). On the sixth night of the moon white-robed Druid priests would cut the oak mistletoe with a golden sickle. Two white bulls would be sacrificed amid prayers that the recipients of the mistletoe would prosper. Later, the ritual of cutting the mistletoe from the oak came to symbolize the emasculation of the old King by his successor. Mistletoe was long regarded as both a sexual symbol and the "soul" of the oak. It was gathered at both mid-summer and winter solstices, and the custom of using mistletoe to decorate houses at Christmas is a survival of the Druid and other pre-Christian traditions. The Greeks also thought that it had mystical powers and down through the centuries it became associated with many folklore customs. In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to prevent the entrance of witches. It was also believed that the oak mistletoe could extinguish fire. This was associated with an earlier belief that the mistletoe itself could come to the tree during a flash of lightning. The traditions which began with the European mistletoe were transferred to the similar American plant with the process of immigration and settlement.

Date Night!

The new restaurant in the Cental Mezzulana(sp?) is fully open. I headed there Monday night for their cheap pasta night. For $10 you get your choice of 3 pasta dishes and a glass of wine. Pretty good deal.
When I walked in I was immediatly happy to have the Central back and happy to see all of the ex-Red Tree staff, cuz they are cool to me.
The place's atmosphere was clean, sexy and cozy. Wasnt decorated to be "Italian" like the menu's theme, but thats okay, the place is really nice. Around the restaurant I saw many noted Fernie couples dining and batting eyelashes over candlelight. awwwww. The music was cool and chill electronic until it took a bad turn for Bob Marley, which really didnt impress my date. Hahahah
Tammy was our server and she was great, no problems there. But she did tell us that on Mondays you can ONLY order the cheap pasta, you can't order off the menu. But since is was slow, she said we could, but normally we wouldnt be able to. Thats kinda weird? Pasta in a kitchen is easy and premade right? I did peak at the menu out of curiousity, it was your standard Italian menu made for the masses, but thats exactly what Fernie needed downtown to me. Had affordable appys, which is good!
My date and I ordered 2 appys and the cheap pasta special. Our red wine came, and it was nasty wine, it reminded me of when I stole a bottle of my mom's wine she made at the u-brew in 1989.. 'cept I stole and tried to drink it in '98. ewwwwwwww.
But you cant really complain when your fresh bread, dinner and drink is $10 and you have a great server and romanitc setting in front of a fire!
We got the spagetti with meat sauce, it was totally good, neeed a healthy dose of salt, but thats just me.
We followed it with the Tiramasu dessert. Even tho it looked like a hospital cafeteria cake, it was good too!
Overall Id give it 3 outta 5 stars. Well done, Ill be back!

Tip: Order a better wine, pay the difference. If its -24 out, sit at the fireside table. Admire the cool photos on the long wall.

SADD

Winter is totally here and the longest day of the year hasnt even arrived yet. (boooooo)
Im someone that is totally is affected by lack of sunlight(Im meant to have a glowing tan people!!), I just dont have any energy AT ALL in the winter. When I finally recognized the problem last winter I went searching for help and help came in a tiny bottle called Vital Greens by Naka.
To turn my energy level up I started taking one ounce of this a day. In summer I decresed it to one teaspoon. But I've upped it back to an ounce starting this month.
After about a month when I first started this stuff, I really did notice a difference in my energy, my mood and my skin! This stuff is amazing and I really recommened it, Im a REAL testimonial here! I should be sponsored by this shit.
If you need a punch of nutritional magic once a day in your life, then go to the Cottonwood Tree and buy this NOW. Jus sayin.
I would recommened a tasty juice chaser after you shoot this ounce of chorophyll back.

Cracked the Spine!

I finally cracked open the Island Lake Cookbook to give a recipe a try. I had just finished making the Chili Con Carne from the Whitewater Cookbook, so my expectations were high. I leafed through the desserts and finally settled on the Toffee Almond Bars on page 161 I believe. Seemed easy enough, I can handle some bars. Hell I remember making Nanaimo bars with my sister when I was 12! So this should be easy.
And...it was! Super easy and a nice little Sunday project. They turned out to be FABULOUS and they went GREAT with a little Sortilege (see post on Sortilege).
The only thing I would say is that the intructions said to "line pan with parchment paper" but I wasnt sure what that meant, like line the bottom and the sides? I ended up laying a massive piece of parchment paper down in the pan, so it spilled over all sides and then put the crust and filling in. Which turned out to be the best move cuz the filling is super sticky. So maybe I just actrually did it right! hahaa

They are sooo good and perfect for Christmas treats.

Fine! You Win!

I must eat my words... I resigned with Telus when I got my blackberry.
But seriously, I got a good deal, a wicked phone and a siiiiiiiiiiiiiick plan.
And after all the shit with Rogers in the news lately, Im feeling okay with this defeat. Rogers is heading to court cuz they advertise they have "the fastest network" but Telus and Bell said they clearly dont and its false advertising. And today in the news some lady went to CBC about how her "Free" text messaging actrually cost 15cents pre text, read here soooo look over your plan and bill you Rogers customers!

So ya, Im with Telus, but Im STOKED on this Blackberry Bold!!! Its faster then a Iphone, neenerrneee nerrrr

Makes a Great Gift!!

I recentley discovered this tasty sipper "Sortilège Maple Liqueur". Its Canadian whiskey blended with maple syrup. Now, you cant get more Canadian then that right?
Well this is absolutely wonderful for sipping at any time in the afternoon or evening...I do know this for a fact.
Im one of those people that throw out every magazine, EXCEPT those "Taste BC Liquor Store" magazines, becuase they are so great for recipes and ideas. Love em! And I was leafing through the Holiday '08 one when I found "Sortilege". I ended up finding it at the Fernie government liquor store with the help of their lovely staff. It was about $30. I love booze shopping at Christmas, its tradition in my family, the once a year trip we buy Kahula and $20 bottles of wine. Cheers!!

Click Here to read the highlights.

Oprah recommends "The Massuese" as the top porn flick for women. Its suppsoed to be a great story line with erotica. Neat.

OXON HILL, Md. - The company that makes the chick-and bunny-shaped marshmallow confections called Peeps is opening the first store devoted to them.

The shop, in a mall near Washington, D.C., sells everything from Peeps plush toys to one-of-a-kind artwork and Peeps china by the 130-year-old tableware maker Lenox Corp. It opens Thursday.

The brightly-colored candies are a staple in Easter baskets in the United States.

Kathy Bassininski, who oversaw the creation of the Peeps&Company store for Just Born, the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, company that has made the candies since the 1950s, says fans have requested a store for years.

ALL THE MONEY GOES TO SALVATION ARMY! EFF YA KYLE THANKS!!!!

Worth The Money

Man, the Sirius Radio channel "90s on 9" is amazing! Im totally getting old I know. One thing that I was thinking when I was listening to all 90s tunes was how buying a CD was soooo 90s. I remember the first CD I ever owned, it was Green Day Dookie. I stil have it. The second was The Offspring and I beleive the third was The Fugees. The thing about buying CDs is that sometimes you had to take a risk and by a CD based solely on the one good song you know it had. And if that CD turned out to have additional great songs, then it was totally worth the money. I remember buying "Cake" for the "I will survive" cover. The rest of the CD was shit, I was sooo pissed, that was $17!!! Makes me really appriciate Itunes!
So then I got thinking of what ALBUMS I really enjoyed in the 90s. A full CD of songs I liked, so I didnt have to make more mixed tapes right? Here are my favorite albums of the 90s just off the top of my head, in no particular order:

-Green Day Dookie
-Nirvana In Utero
-Alanis Morrisette Jagged Little Pill
-Beck Odelay
-Radiohead Ok Computer
-Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation
-Much Dance 1995-97
-Aerosmith Get a Grip
-Beastie Boys Ill Communication
-Better Then Ezra Deluxe
-the Pretty Woman Soundtrack!!!

Im sure there are more, but these were totally worth the money!!

B.C. alcohol consumption rising too quickly: study: Fernie to blame

CBC News:
A group of researchers is urging the B.C. government to raise the price of alcoholic beverages and to consider making them less available in the wake of a study that shows consumption is rising faster in the province than anywhere else in the country.

The study by the McCreary Centre Society and five B.C. universities found that alcohol consumption has increased in the province 16 per cent over the last decade compared to nine per cent in the rest of the country.

It also found evidence of increasing availability and use of crack cocaine, ecstasy and prescription medications in B.C., while the use of marijuana and methamphetamine appeared to be dropping.

The study said adolescents were found to be drinking and smoking less.

But researchers expressed the greatest concern about the growing legal use of alcohol.

B.C. now has the second highest per-capita alcohol consumption in Canada after Nunavut.

Change in availability recommended
"It's to do with the hours of which the stores and bars are open," said Tim Stockwell, director of the University of Victoria Centre for Addictions Research.

"It's [also] to do with how many there are, and it's to do with the price it's being sold at."

Stockwell said excessive drinking can lead to a range of serious health issues, including eight types of cancer.

"The liquor distribution branch — the government monopoly — could use its powers to good effect to curb this silent epidemic that's growing, of increasing alcohol-related trauma and death and chronic illness."

One recommendation of the study, released Wednesday, recommends linking the price of beverages to their alcohol content by increasing the cost of stronger drinks.

Ice Gala Success $7664 Raised for Salvation Army's Fernie Family Services

Ice Gala Success $7664 Raised for Salvation Army's Fernie Family Services

Dazzling in hues of blue and sparking in diamonds ICE Gala hosted by Freyja Lifestyle Fashion and The Clubhouse at the Fernie Golf and Country Club raised $7664 for the Fernie Salvation Army’s Family Services. Other money is still trickling in from the evening to push the total higher. Aiming to raise $5000, you can say organizers Chantel Souliere and Lindsay Adams are absolutely blown away with the support and generosity of the people of Fernie.

“This was our second year getting this gala together, and this year turned out to just magical. All the volunteers and Clubhouse staff were absolute angels in creating this evening, I’m just blown away”, says Chantel, “the party goers were beaming right up to the very end on a raging dance floor, it was awesome!”.

The event was an absolute sell out, extra money was also raised through a raffle draw that evening and the bar proceeds from the Clubhouse. “The staff at the Clubhouse also donated all their tips from the evening which gave the total an extra $686. Also, that evening Eric Johnson from the East Kootenay Community Credit Union came up and told us we could count on an extra $250 from them”, said Lindsay.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who made the evening possible.

The ICE Gala would not be possible without the tremendous support from:
